An art history museum that explores the origins of Flemish identity, with a particular focus on the 16th and 17th centuries, offers inspiration to every visitor. It was a challenging period in history, and the Southern Netherlands faced crises on many fronts. Spanish rule brought wars, religious conflict, and cultural tensions. At the same time, there were citizens who helped raise awareness of the importance of preserving the unique character and heritage of our region.

A figure such as Nicolaas Rockox, who served several times as Mayor of Antwerp, is a prime example. The museum also addresses universal themes that were relevant in the past and remain highly topical today, including multiculturalism, diversity, travel, poverty, trade and commerce, food, and migration.
